CERT Class - Jan. 3 - Jan. 17
The City of Surprise has implemented a community emergency response training approach to community preparedness. The purpose of the CERT program is to prepare neighborhoods, businesses, special interest groups, places of worship, industry and virtually any other group of individual for a natural, man made or terrorist disaster. The CERT program provides your neighborhood with enough training and knowledge to survive on your own until emergency crews can arrive to assist you. A Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) program has been developed and is being offered to interested residents.

Movie Mornings at Heard Museum West - Jan. 9
Shadow Warrior: A Return to Iwo Jima (2007, 35 min) details the story of Navajo Code Talker Teddy Draper Sr.’s 2005 journey back to the Pacific Island of Iwo Jima. Accompanied by two other veterans, Draper joins a group of 80 aging World War II veterans to relive their war memories and commemorate the 60th anniversary of the historic Battle of Iwo Jima.

Home-based Franchise Seminar - Jan. 10
Have you ever thought of working from home, but aren’t so sure how to get started? Then make plans to attend the Surprise Home-based Franchise Seminar on January 10.

The free seminar is planned from 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 10, at the Surprise Regional Library, 16089 N. Bullard Avenue.

Heard Museum West Evening Lecture … Laura Tohe - Jan. 14
Oral and Written Literature Among Southwestern Indigenous Writers and Storytellers
This presentation focuses on oral literature such as songs, stories, prayers and the traditional art of storytelling and its links to contemporary works in a selected survey of Southwestern Indigenous writers. The audience will gain an understanding and appreciation of indigenous literature and how some contemporary writers draw on the oral tradition and visual quality in language to write stories, poetry and narratives. Laura Tohe, Diné, has written and co-authored four books, essays, stories, a children’s play and a commissioned libretto for the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra. She is currently an associate professor in the English Department at Arizona State University. This talk is sponsored by the Arizona Humanities Council and is free and open to the public.

Heard Museum West Continuing Education … Angel De Cora Lecture - Jan. 22
Linda M. Waggoner, author of the book Fire Light: The Life of Angel De Cora, Winnebago Artist, will discuss the life of one of the early 20th century’s most overlooked American Indian artists. De Cora (1869-1919) was an artist and illustrator, educator and advocate for the Indian art movement. FREE and open to the public. Waggoner will sign copies of her book after the lecture.
